The ban was imposed in India by the Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY), months ago. VideoLan, a non profit organization that runs VLC Player, issued an October legal notice requesting the reasons behind the ban.

VLC Player Now Available in India

This information is derived from a tweet of the Internet Freedom Foundation (IFF), who provided legal support for VideoLan during the ban. Unban means that you will be able now to download the VLC Player India. You can now access the VideoLan website.

VideoLan allegedly received an email from MeitY confirming that the ban had been lifted. The email did not contain any explanation for the decision.

VLC Player was also banned without prior notice in February of this year. Many telecom operators started banning VLC Player after the ban was lifted, without giving any reason.

VideoLan and IFF sent a notice in October to MeitY asking for answers about the sudden ban. MeitY responded and said that the VLC Player had displayed ” suspicious behaviour”. This was in response to a China-backed hacking organization called Cicada . It was accused of accessing users’ personal data and threatening their privacy. This information was derived from Symantec’s April 2015 report. VideoLan denied such claims.

Jean-Baptiste Kempf, the company’s president and chief developer, claimed that the ban was a result of a misinterpretation. Kempf stressed the fact that VLC Player is used by approximately 80 million people. They would like to receive updates via unreliable third parties, which makes them more vulnerable to cyber-attacks.
